Middle-East Policy

Mustafa Hirji (email) at 12:16 AM

James Bow makes a very good post on the hypocracy of certain Conservatives over Middle-East policy.

North Korean Nuke Test Imminent?

Mustafa Hirji (email) at 06:40 AM

Analysts are wondering if North Korea is about to test a nuclear bomb. This is, predictably, causing a great deal of anxiety.

However, if we currently aren't sure whether or not North Korea has a nuclear weapon, wouldn't it be a good thing if they test a bomb? That way we'd know for sure that they actually have the bomb (which we currently have to assume they do out of precaution). The worst case scenario is that we gain more knowledge, North Korea loses one bomb, and we continue to deal with them in the same way we've been doing until now except with the certainty that they are a nuclear power. A better case scenario is that their bomb test fails and we can go back to treating North Korea is a would-be nuclear power.

"I've got a solution for the airport security problem..."

Secretary of Snark (email) at 05:23 PM

"...Just make everyone fly naked," a friend quipped.

I'll admit, that does reduce luggage needs to the, um, "bare essentials" (groan). But, this is by no means an original idea. (Remember Hooters Air?).

Granted, I prefer the TSA/CATSA-approved unitard, given to all airborne passengers. You definitely won't have anything to hide! And, oh, the Lycra!

Stylin' air passenger spandex! With this season's colours, too!

In all seriousness, it's saddenning to see yet another restriction on air travel. I personally take a Nalgene bottle of water everywhere I travel; it'll now be much more tricky to keep properly hydrated while flying. And how about the draconian passenger rules in the UK, where they make passengers check in nearly all of their luggage, including magazines, books, computers, cellphones, and Stradivarius violins.

An (incredibly banal) quotation during the aftermath of 9/11 was the phrase, "If we change the way we live, then the terrorists have won." Disappointingly, we may be approaching that stage. Sigh.

Mustafa Hirji (email) at 01:33 PM

I endorse the NDP's proposed Parliamentary "tenant revolt" to reclaim parliamentary control over the Parliament Buildings and the Hill.

Correcting Some Accusations Against Lieberman

Mustafa Hirji (email) at 05:08 PM

Steve Smith wades into the Lieberman-Lamont issue but seems a bit confused as to what Lieberman's political beliefs actually are. In particular, Steve is wrong about two claims:
